The problem

You were given a market.
Nobody gave you the map.

Most teams arrive in Central & Eastern Europe with a target, a budget, and no context at all.

When a Chinese company posts a marketing or sales team to Central & Eastern Europe, the handover usually covers the numbers. The targets. The reporting lines. The product roadmap.

What it almost never covers is how this region actually works — why local media behaves the way it does, why a signed email isn't a decision, why the campaign that performed brilliantly at home lands flat here, and why the local team keeps saying yes to things that never happen.

That gap costs quarters. Sometimes years. Not because anyone is doing anything wrong, but because two very different operating logics are meeting without a translator.

This guide is that translator. It is the document I wish someone had handed me — and the one I have effectively been writing, in my head, for a decade.

Two business cultures meeting without a translator is not a communication problem. It is a cost.

What it covers

The things nobody writes down.

How decisions really get made
Why a confirmation in writing is not the same as a decision, how European approval chains actually run, and where the misunderstandings between headquarters and local teams reliably occur.
Media & communication
How editorial independence works in this region, what earned coverage requires, and why the tactics that build visibility at home can quietly damage credibility here.
Working with local teams
Reading the signals your European colleagues are actually sending, what "yes" means in different contexts, and how to build a team that tells you the truth early rather than late.
Consumers & brand perception
Why specifications and price do less work here than expected, what European consumers are really evaluating, and how trust in an unfamiliar brand is built over time.
The region itself
Central & Eastern Europe is not one market and does not behave like Western Europe. What actually differs, where the opportunities sit, and how to plan for it.

Who wrote this

Maja Knezevic

I have spent 23 years in mobile industry marketing — including senior marketing leadership roles at Nokia, Samsung, Huawei and HONOR.

More than a decade of that was spent inside Chinese companies building their presence in European markets: running launches, managing local teams, briefing European media, and translating — constantly — between two business cultures that rarely start out speaking the same language.

This guide is the accumulated version of those years. Not theory. The things I learned by getting them wrong first.
